The Cleveland County ALWS Baseball committee is once again seeking qualified students to serve as official Bat Girls/Bat Boys at the 2024 American Legion World Series. Due to the inherent dangers of being on the baseball diamond, all applicants are REQUIRED to be currently playing (2024) in an organized baseball or softball program (Little League, Dixie, City Parks and Rec. program, etc.) Student must be 10 to 12 years of age. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2024.
ROLE OF A BAT BOY OR BAT GIRL
A Bat Boy or Bat Girl has a responsibility to assist the players and coaches, and, ultimately, help speed up the game.
Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
Retrieving bats left in the dugout or on the field.
Gathering arm and shin guards that batters drop.
Participating in team pregame warmups at the discretion of the coach.
Other Guidelines:
Arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled game wearing your lanyard. Report to Chris or Jean Horne along the first base line in front of the Lowe’s Center.
Remain still during the Code of Conduct and the national anthem.
Safety is the top priority. A Bat Boy or Bat Girl must:
— Stay engaged in the game.
— Wear a helmet at all times – in the dugout and on the field.
— Stay in the dugout during the game until the game is halted or the umpire calls “time.”
— Go on the field only to retrieve bats and gear.
— NOT stand on the steps of the dugout during the game.
— Keep his or her cell phone in a backpack unless there is an emergency.
The ALWS Executive Committee relies on the help of volunteers to work as gatekeepers, ushers, shuttle drivers, and concession staff during the series. Volunteers are also needed on the Saturday prior to the start of the games for the ALWS Festival in Uptown Shelby.
Gatekeepers are responsible for checking tickets at the main gate during the ALWS games. They must be aware of the different types of tickets and how each should be handled. Gatekeepers typically work four-hour shifts. Volunteers are needed for day games.
Ushers are responsible for helping ticket holders find their seats. Ushers must be knowledgeable about Keeter Stadium and the numbering of reserved seats, box seats, rocking chair seats and the correct locations for handicapped fans. Ushers wear yellow vests over their volunteer T-shirts; the word USHER is on the back so fans entering the stadium can read it. Ushers typically work three-hour shifts (one game).
Concession staff work in the main concession stand, at the drink and snack tent next to the concession stand or at the grill next to the concession stand. They typically work three-hour shifts (one game); they are asked to be at the stadium one hour before the game for which they are working.
Shuttle drivers are responsible for picking up attendees in the parking lots around Shelby High School and delivering them to Keeter Stadium. They also return attendees to the parking lots after each game. Drivers must be familiar with golf cart operations. They are expected to be courteous and careful drivers. Most work four-hour shifts, long enough to cover an entire game.
